Mumbles is a headland located at the western end of Swansea Bay on the southern coast of Wales. Mumbles is a place that has been praised for its unique name. The headland is believed by certain people to be given the name by French sailors, based on the shape of two anthropomorphic islands that comprise the headland: the term “Mumbles” may be a variation to”Mumbles” which is French Les Mamelles which means “the breasts”.
Mumbles Lighthouse was built during the 1790s and transformed into a solar-powered operation in 1995.
Mumbles Pier was opened in 1898, at the point of departure of the Swansea and Mumbles Railway, which was the first public passenger train drawn by horses. service. It was inaugurated on the 2nd of March 1807 and was powered by horses until 1877, and then steam power until 1929, after which it was changed to overhead double deck electric trams, which lasted until the line was shut down in January 1960.
Mumbles Lifeboat Station has operated since 1866. In 1947 the entire crew of lifeboats was lost in the sea while trying to save the crew of the SS Samtampa, which is now known as the Mumbles lifeboat tragedy. The closest church All Saints’ church, Oystermouth, contains memorials to the crew members.
